Obituary

Hilton passed away peacefully Sunday, surrounded by family, on his 79th birthday due to Parkinson’s.

He grew up in Webster Groves. He played saxophone and jazz clarinet in a jazz band in high school. He studied engineering at Park University where he met Joy, his wife of 59 years. They raised 3 children: Patrick, Mary & Diane.

Loving father and husband, Hilton was a hard worker. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, including his mother, retiring from Ford Motor Company after 37 years. Dad could fix or build anything from house projects to auto repair to industrial equipment. He also operated a machine shop offering welding and machining services. A lifelong learner, Dad was an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife Joy, son Patrick (Tara) of Sparta, TN, daughters Mary Slayton Richards of Kansas City, MO & Diane Slayton Schmidt (Steve) of Lenexa, KS; 6 grandchildren, Samantha (JJ) Colette, Laura, Abby, Nathan, and Caroline: 2 great-grandchildren JP and Isaac. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kathryn “Kitty” Ruppersberger Hayes Slayton and Hilton Hathaway Slayton II.

Hilton was a generous man with his family and the community. His final gift, donating his brain to further the search for a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Visitation will be Friday, August 23, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM; Memorial Service at 11:00 AM. Meal will be served immediately following at Potosi Presbyterian Church, Potosi.
